COLLAGEN

What is it?

Collagen is a protein, that is a very important building block for the human body, It seals the protective lining of the gut. It also holds our bones together, allowing us to move freely. It's naturally made in the body, but starts to decrease as we age. Especially with environmental toxins, such as smoking, consuming alcohol, and sun damage.

 

Health benefits:

It's important for skin heath and healing. It provides structure, support and strength to your skin, muscles, bones and connective tissues.

 

GELATIN:

What is it?

Gelatin is a protein that derives from animal bones and binds with water to help food move through the intestines.

 

Health benefits:

It can help inflammation, join pain and sleep

 

GLUCOSAMINE AND CHONDROITIN

What is it?

Glucosamine and Chondroitin are both natural compounds found in cartilage.

 

Health benefits:

They can potentially help joint pain. Some people take this in supplement form for arthritic pain, but research studies have mixed results, as to if this works or not.

 

AMINO ACIDS

What is it?

Amino acids are building blocks for making proteins in the body. It can be made in the body and we get from foods.

MINERALS: Calcium, Magnesium and Phosphorus:

What do they do?

Minerals help with circulation, bone density, nerve signalling functions, heart health and digestive health.

 

Health benefits:

Contrary to recent marketing. Studies haven't found a huge amount of calcium, magnesium or phosphorus minerals in bone broth. There is some so you'll get some benefits.

How to Make Bone Broth

 

  1. Fill a large pan (or use a slow cooker) with 1 gallon of water (ideally filtered).

  2. Place one whole chicken (or meat bones of choice). Into the pan.

  3. Add additional healthy ingredients for more flavor. Such as; onion, celery, carrot, parsley, thyme, leeks and garlic. Sea salt and pepper to taste.

  4. Bring to a boil. For about 1 hour.

  5. Reduce to temperature to low and cook for a further 12-24 hours.

  6. Remove the meat/poultry pieces which you can use for meals separately or with the soup.

  7. Then once fully cooked. Strain off any remaining broth and discard/compost the bones.

  8. Also great to batch and put the remainder in containers. Pop in the freezer for the weeks meals ahead.

 


 

POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS

  • If prepared bone broth isn't prepared and manufactured properly. It may contain lead which can be harmful to the body. Which can be leached from the bones into the water. Leading to potential lead poisoning.

  • If it's not stored properly, could lead to bacteria contamination.

 

Some other side effects can be:

  • Stomach upset

  • Increased bowel movements

  • Inflammatory bowel syndrome

  • Bloating

  • Constipation

  • Nausea

 


 

MEDICATION INTERACTIONS:

The amino acids in bone broth may interact with blood thinners.

Always consult with your doctor, if you are on any medications that may interacts with certain foods.
